5 Alternative Shampoo Products for Sisterlocks
I’ve had several people ask me what alternative shampoos to use to cleanse the hair without jeopardizing the locking process. If you are someone who is not able to use the sisterlocks starter shampoo for whatever reason, (scalp sensitivity, dermatitis on the scalp, etc.), then you can ask your sisterlock consultant if you can try a light liquid clarifying shampoo. In today’s post, I’m sharing my top picks for the best alternative clarifying shampoos that are great for locs.

1. Trader Joe’s Tea Tree Tingle Shampoo

The Tea Tree Tingle Shampoo from Trader Joe’s has been around since 2011 when I first started my natural hair journey. It was good then, and it is still good now! It has made its way around the natural hair and loc communities because of its refreshing tingle experience. The product works well on new locs because it thoroughly cleanses the scalp and leaves no residue behind. It is an affordable shampoo that lasts for a long time.
Some of its benefits include:
Tea tree essential oil, which helps reduce itching, dandruff, and dryness
It rinses out easily
It removes buildup
It makes your scalp feel tingly and refreshing, and it makes your hair feel clean and fresh
2. Dr Bronner's Pure-Castile Liquid Soap in Peppermint

The Dr. Bronner’s Pure-Castile Liquid Soap in Peppermint is another great throw back from my natural hair days. But here’s the catch, this product is not a shampoo, it is actually a soap. The Pure-Castile Soap can be used as a shampoo for locs, but you have to dilute it with purified water. You should not use the soap directly onto your locs without diluting it first.
If using this soap to cleanse your scalp, I recommend to braid and band first, dilute it (per the instructions on the label), and use a color applicator bottle to apply the diluted mixture directly to the scalp.
Some of its benefits include:
- The peppermint creates a tingly shampoo experience
- You can use it to clean the scalp and you can use it for many other things like cleaning or body wash
- Leaves your hair feeling clean without any residue
- Lasts such a long time because you have to dilute it
- Keeps the scalp feeling fresh
The Pure-Castile Liquid Soap is not a soap that you would use for a long period of time. I only recommend using this soap to help cleanse the hair during the initial locking process. I would not recommend this soap for new colored locs.

The Neutrogena Shampoo Anti-Residue Formula is another great shampoo that specializes in removing buildup and residue. It helps the hair get really clean and rinses out really easily. This shampoo does not have a tingly shampoo experience, so if you are not a fan of the tingle, this can be a great option.
Some of its benefits include:
- Reduces dandruff
- Eliminates Buildup
- Gets the hair clean
Final Thoughts
These are really great alternative shampoos for those who may not be able to use the sisterlock starter shampoo. As always, check with your sisterlock consultant first before switching to one of these shampoos. You definitely want to communicate with them to let them know what you are using on your hair. I hope you find one of these alternatives to be helpful in your loc journey. Let me know in the comments which ones you have tried and which ones you like the most.
