How to Feel Confident with Sisterlocks: 5 Simple Tips
Sisterlocks are a beautiful and versatile hairstyle, however, it can be challenging to feel confident when you first get them installed. While some may fall in love with their new locs right away, others may require some time to adjust. It’s not uncommon for some to struggle with feeling confident and attractive during the early and mid-stages of having sisterlocks due to their hair appearing scalpy, stringy, short (due to shrinkage), stiff, or fuzzy, etc.
Well, don’t worry, hair confidence can be built up over time with these 5 simple tips. In this post, I’m sharing 5 ways you can feel confident and empowered with your sisterlocks throughout your journey.
1. Embrace Your Uniqueness
Sisterlocks are truly unique to each individual, making them one of the best things about this hairstyle. No two sets of sisterlocks are identical, and that is something to take pride in. Your locks may have various hair type patterns, different lengths in the front versus the back, or even grey hairs, lint, shrinkage, thinning, slippage, or holes. Nevertheless, it is essential to embrace your locks as they are. Imperfections are a natural part of the process, and your locks are not expected to be flawless.
Embrace all the aspects that you perceive as flaws and accept them as part of the journey towards self-love. Keep in mind that your sisterlocks showcase your individual beauty. It’s fine to have loc crushes but I challenge you to be your own loc crush.
2. Experiment With Different styles
Sisterlocks are an incredibly versatile hairstyle that offers a multitude of styling options. Often, after getting sisterlocks installed, we tend to wear them the way they were installed, which is straight and out. However, there are many ways to style them.
When I got my sisterlocks installed, my sisterlocktician curled my locs with lock loops to give me some curls to help disguise my parts. This immediately boosted my confidence as soon as I hopped out of her chair and made me feel better about my appearance.
Throughout my hair journey, I experimented with different styles to feel confident and comfortable in various settings. For instance, when I worked in corporate, I didn’t feel comfortable wearing my locs out straight yet. I found a way to style them professionally by doing a flat twist goddess twist around my head (pictured). It was a quick and easy style that I could do before work.
As my hair changed, I started experiencing breakage and holes in my locs that made me feel less confident. To boost my confidence, I tried new hairstyles such as pipe cleaner curls, which helped disguise the holes and short locs. This hairstyle made me feel confident and love my hair.
Experiment with different styles and find what works best for you. There are plenty of options to choose from, so don’t be afraid to try something new and step out of your comfort zone.
3. Practice Good Loc Maintenance
To feel confident with sisterlocks, it’s essential to stay on top of loc maintenance and practice good hair care. When you practice good loc maintenance, you minimize the risk of encountering issues with your locks, which ultimately affects your hair confidence.
Below are some tips for practicing good loc maintenance:
- Follow your sisterlocktician’s maintenance instructions
- Attend retightening appointments regularly
- Braid and band when washing
- Avoid products that may hinder the locking process
- Use sisterlock products to create the ideal environment for proper hair locking
- If you are self-retightening, avoid accidentally going through the same direction in the rotation, which will cause holes in the locs
- Keep your bonnet on while you are at home and when changing clothes to avoid lint getting in the locs
4. Connect With Other Sisterlocks Wearers
Connecting with other sisterlocks wearers can boost your confidence in your hairstyle. You can join online Facebook groups or connect with many sisterlock sistas on Instagram by using hashtags such as #sisterlocks, #sisterlockstyles, #sisterlocksinstallation, and #sisterlocksjourney. By talking to others who are on the same journey as you, you can relate, share tips and advice, ask questions, and connect with others who also have sisterlocks. This helps you feel empowered and confident instead of feeling alone.
Actually, this is exactly how I started Tasha On Lock back in 2018. I utilized Instagram to find my tribe of sisterlock sistas and they have helped me build my hair confidence up tremendously throughout my sisterlock journey.
5. Be Proud of Your Sisterlocks
Be proud of your hair! Sisterlocks are a beautiful and unique hairstyle that requires dedication, commitment, patience and care. Flaunt it and show off your hair freedom and hair confidence. Remember your reason for why you got sisterlocks in the first place. That reason will keep you motivated throughout your journey and will remind you why you deserve to feel confident!
Also, embrace your locks at each stage of the loc process. Don’t just wait until they get longer or more locked before you start loving your hair, start now. The more you pour love into your locs the more you will increase your confidence.
You can even take it a step further and repeat hair confidence affirmations that I shared with my email subscribers. Repeat these hair affirmations as much as you need to. You’ll begin to notice your mindset shift to be more positive and confident throughout your sisterlock journey. Lastly, remember that your hair is a part of who you are, and it’s something to be proud of.
Feeling confident with sisterlocks takes time and effort, but it’s worth it. With these tips, you’ll be feeling confident and beautiful with your sisterlocks in no time.
